Protege 3.1.1 keeps crashing with JavaNativeCrash on Mac OS 10.3.9

Dona Mommsen

Hi,

I've been using using Protege 3.1.1 on Mac OS 10.3.9 for a while
without problem, but now it keeps crashing. When I try to start
Protege, the icon bounces shortly, and the only output in the console
is:

> CONFIG: Protege 3.1.1 Build 216, JVM 1.4.2_09-233, memory=184M, Mac OS
> X, encoding=UTF-8, language=en, country=US

In addition, I get a  crash log  for a JavaNativeCrash (see below).
Please note that even a complete new download and installation (basic)
has the same problem.

Thanks in advance for any ideas / suggestions.

Dona

Re: Protege 3.1.1 keeps crashing with JavaNativeCrash on Mac OS 10.3.9

Timothy Redmond

My initial guess is that your java installation has either been
corrupted or something is wrong with it.  (Not entirely helpful
but...)  Your idea to reload the latest version of Protege was
exactly what I would have tried first.  But the error seems to
involve the java vm rather than protege.  Interestingly, java has
actually started, created a new thread and started doing things.  In
particular (in case this gives anybody a  clue as to the problem) the
jvm seems to be crashing on the line of code

        UIManager.put("ClassLoader", lookAndFeel.getClass().getClassLoader())

in the protege routine SystemUtilities.setLookAndFeel().

Did you recently do a software update or install any software?  Are
you having trouble with any other java programs (particularly swing
based)?  Sorry - this is very mysterious.

Re: Protege 3.1.1 keeps crashing with JavaNativeCrash on Mac OS 10.3.9

Geri Durka-Pelok
In reply to this post by Dona Mommsen
I've had the same OS 10.3.9 problem.  The only upgrade I've done was to
QuickTime which, from what my QuickTime colleagues here have been
saying, is known to wipe out or corrupt a number of applications on the
Mac (SoundSoap and other video/audio apps seem to be particularly
affected). That might be the upgrade problem causing my protege problem
but I'm not sure.

anyone else?

So this could be.  A quick google of quicktime and java problems
brings up the following page:

Re: Protege 3.1.1 keeps crashing with JavaNativeCrash on Mac OS 10.3.9

Geri Durka-Pelok
Well, I think it is QT 7.0.4.  I just uninstalled 7.0.4 with an
installer that replaces 0.4 with 0.1 (for the installer, go to
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.html)

Protege works fine now.

Re: Protege 3.1.1 keeps crashing with JavaNativeCrash on Mac OS 10.3.9

Dona Mommsen

Geri, Timothy,

thank you very much for your help. Downgrading Quicktime worked, and
you saved me a lot of trouble in finding the culprit, since I suspected
ShapeShifter (a software that alters the look and feel, but which was
completely innocent).

Again, thanks a lot

Dona
