Retrospective and Perspective of Petri Net Research
Friday June 28th 2019
Tivoli Stadium, Aachen, Germany
Carl Adam Petri (12 July 1926 – 2 July 2010) introduced the most widely used notation for modeling concurrency in the 1960-ties. Although Petri nets are very simple, they capture the essence of concurrency (an important but difficult concept). This reflected by the large body of work created by the thousands of scientists that studied these nets. The International Conference on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets and Concurrency is the flagship conference of the Petri net community. The conference was first organized in 1980 Strasbourg, France. Since then the conference has been organized annually. The 40th Petri Nets conference will take place in June in Aachen. To celebrate this milestone, a special session with eminent speakers will take place on the closing day of the conference. The invited talks will reflect on the history of Petri net research and discuss the future of the field.
Session 1 (chair: Jörg Desel)
13.30 Wolfgang Reisig: How it all begun
14.10 Maciej Koutny: The Petri net community today (including statistics)
Session 2 (chair Alex Yakovlev)
15.10 Gianfranco Balbo: 35 years of (generalized) stochastic Petri nets for performance analysis
15.30 Javier Esparza: 25 years of net unfoldings and true-concurrency analysis tools
15.50 Wil van der Aalst: 20 years of workflow Petri nets, initiating the biggest success story of Petri nets
16.10 Fabrice Kordon: 10 years of model checking contest with Petri nets
16.30 coffee break
Session 3 (chair Jetty Kleijn)
17.00 P.S. Thiagarajan: Some thoughts on Carl Adam Petri, Petri nets, concurrency theory and biology
The 40th Petri Nets conference and also the special session will take place in the conference area of the Tivoli football stadium close to the city center of Aachen. This beautiful venue will provide a unique atmosphere with great views and excellent conference facilities. In the same week, also the International Conference on Process Mining (ICPM 2019) and the 19th International Conference on Application of Concurrency to System Design (ACSD 2019) will take place at the same location.
